Data Center Ordinance

The NKC Board of Supervisors is working on an ordinance specifically for data centers in New Kent County. The ordinance is expected to be finalized and adopted by the end of this year. We are collecting information related to the history and ongoing progress of this effort. The final ordinance will play a large part in either preserving or dramatically changing the environment and quality of life in NKC.

Our standard

The four pillars of transparency

01

Access

Open Access to Information provides raw material and includes strong presumptions against secrecy.

02

Oversight

Independent Oversight and Accountability give it force and actually leads to consequences for misconduct.

03

Participation

Citizen Participation and Engagement make it practical for residents to monitor, question, and influence officials.

04

Verifiability

Verifiability, Usability and Technological Integrity ensures the material is trustworthy rather than propaganda or noise.

Code of Ethics

We propose a Code of Ethics (6 page PDF) for County officials. This draft was requested by the Transparency for New Kent Corporation and provided by Chap Petersen and Associates, PLC. Chap Petersen is an American attorney, author, and former Democratic politician who served sixteen years in the Virginia Senate representing Fairfax County. He operates his own legal practice, Chap Petersen & Associates, and is well-known for his independent political stances, including his opposition to pandemic-era school closures.
