Public Interest and Opinion

Transparency for New Kent believes an informed community benefits from access not only to public records, but also to thoughtful public discussion about issues affecting New Kent County. This section provides a forum for residents, property owners, business owners, subject-matter experts, community organizations, and other interested persons to submit public-interest papers, opinion pieces, commentary, corrections, and responses for possible publication.

Publication does not constitute endorsement by Transparency for New Kent. Unless a document is specifically identified as an official Transparency for New Kent publication, the views, conclusions, interpretations, and recommendations expressed belong solely to the identified author.

Submission Standards

  • Submissions must concern a legitimate matter of public interest affecting New Kent County or its residents.
  • Authors must provide their real name and valid contact information for verification. Contact information will not ordinarily be published.
  • Factual claims should be supported by identifiable public records, reliable publications, data, firsthand documentation, or other sources that readers can evaluate.
  • Opinion must be distinguishable from statements presented as fact.
  • Allegations of misconduct, illegality, corruption, conflicts of interest, or similar wrongdoing require credible supporting documentation and may receive heightened review.
  • Submissions may not contain threats, harassment, intimidation, doxxing, knowingly false factual statements, obscenity, discriminatory slurs, targeted personal abuse, or material intended to incite hatred or violence.
  • Private personal information, including personal phone numbers, private email addresses, home addresses, medical information, financial information, or information concerning minors, should not be submitted unless it is legitimately part of a public record and necessary to understanding the issue.
  • Disagreement with a government official, public figure, business, organization, policy, project, or another citizen is permitted. Personal attacks unrelated to the public issue are not.
  • Transparency for New Kent may require clarification, sourcing, supporting documentation, revisions, or removal of material before publication.
  • Submission does not guarantee publication.

Editorial Review and Publication

All submissions are subject to review before publication. Transparency for New Kent’s Board of Directors, or persons specifically delegated editorial authority by the Board, retains sole discretion over whether, when, where, and in what form submitted material is published.

Transparency for New Kent may accept, reject, postpone, edit, shorten, format, headline, categorize, annotate, fact-check, request revisions to, archive, correct, update, or remove submitted material. Submission of material does not create a right or entitlement to publication, and Transparency for New Kent may decline a submission without providing a reason.

Routine edits for spelling, grammar, formatting, hyperlinks, citations, privacy, or clarity may be made without changing the author’s substantive position. If a proposed edit would materially alter the author’s meaning, Transparency for New Kent should ordinarily return the revision to the author before publication.

Unless specifically identified as an official Transparency for New Kent publication, the views expressed are solely those of the author.

Corrections, Responses, and Revisions

Transparency for New Kent recognizes that public records, laws, policies, facts, and available information can change over time. Authors are encouraged to correct or update their submissions when new information becomes available.

Transparency for New Kent may append an editor’s note, correction, response, source document, or link to additional information when doing so improves the public record.
